Shopify Built For The American Checkout

A Shopify store selling to Americans has American problems to solve. Sales tax across fifty states with different nexus rules. Shoppers who expect Shop Pay, Apple Pay and PayPal at checkout. Shipping promises that depend on US carriers and 3PL warehouses, not a Royal Mail label. A UK-built theme with dollars pasted over pounds will not cut it.

We build Shopify stores for US brands remotely from our Manchester studio. That means Shopify Tax or Avalara configured for your nexus footprint, ShipStation or ShipBob wired to your warehouse, Klaviyo flows in American English, and themes designed around US buying behaviour — reviews prominent, shipping costs clear early, returns policy impossible to miss.

For growing American brands we work on Shopify Plus: checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions for US-specific discounts and shipping logic, and B2B wholesale channels alongside DTC. Every build ships ADA-conscious, because accessibility lawsuits are a genuine risk for US stores.

The tax problem

US Sales Tax Is A Build Task, Not An Afterthought

America has no single VAT. Thousands of state and local jurisdictions set their own rates, and economic nexus rules mean you can owe tax in states you have never visited. Getting this wrong means back-tax bills; getting it right means configuring Shopify Tax or Avalara against your actual footprint during the build, not bolting it on later.

Checkout is where US stores win or lose. Shop Pay adoption in America is enormous, and shoppers abandon over surprise shipping costs more than anything else. We tune the payment mix and surface real carrier rates early, because a fast theme means nothing if checkout leaks.

3PL integration decides delivery promises. If you warehouse with ShipBob or fulfil through Deliverr-style networks, the store has to reflect real inventory and real transit times. We wire those integrations so "2-day shipping" is a promise the warehouse can keep.

Selling to Americans on another platform? We also build WordPress sites for US businesses, and our standard Shopify development covers UK and international stores.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Why choose Shopify Plus for a US brand?

Plus unlocks checkout extensibility — custom checkout logic, Functions for US-specific discounts and shipping rules, and B2B wholesale alongside your DTC store. For American brands doing serious volume or selling wholesale, those controls pay for themselves. We will tell you honestly if standard Shopify is enough.

How do you handle US sales tax on Shopify?

We configure Shopify Tax for simpler footprints, or Avalara/TaxJar where you have complex nexus across many states. Product tax codes, exemption handling and filing integrations are set up during the build so you launch compliant.

Which US shipping carriers and 3PLs do you integrate?

ShipStation, ShipBob, UPS, FedEx and USPS as standard, with real-time rates at checkout and tracking pushed to customers. If you use a different 3PL, we integrate its API the same way.

What about Shop Pay and American payment methods?

Shop Pay is configured and optimised — it is one of the highest-converting checkout options in the US — alongside Shop Pay Installments, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. We test the full payment mix across states before launch.

How do we work together across the Atlantic?

Manchester is 5 hours ahead of Eastern and 8 ahead of Pacific, so your mornings overlap with our afternoons. Design reviews and launch calls sit in that window; build updates and feedback run async. Launches get scheduled support during US hours.

How much does a Shopify build for the US cost?

A custom Shopify store typically runs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on design, integrations and catalogue size; Shopify Plus builds start higher because of the checkout and B2B work. Shopify's own plan fees are separate. Every project gets a fixed quote in USD before we start.
