TECHNOLOGIES WE BUILD WITH

Some agencies list twenty logos and build with three. We do the opposite: a short stack we know deeply, used in production on real projects — including this very site. Here's what we build with, what each one is genuinely good at, and when we'd honestly recommend something else (or nothing at all).

Overview

A SHORT STACK, KNOWN DEEPLY

There's a temptation in web development to chase the newest thing. We don't, because our clients don't pay us for fashion — they pay us for software that still works in five years and that someone other than us can maintain. Every technology below is one we've shipped real client work on, not one we read a tutorial for.

The boring truth is that most projects don't need exotic engineering. A content site needs to be editable, fast and findable. A shop needs checkout that doesn't drop orders. An app needs to work on both phones without costing double. The stack decision should follow the business problem, and we'd rather talk you down to something simpler than sell you something clever.

So here's our rule: we'll recommend the technology that fits your project, your team and your budget — and we'll tell you when none of ours is the right answer. If your project genuinely needs something outside our stack, we'd rather say so upfront than learn it badly on your money.

Everything below is backed by production work: our own site runs on a custom PHP CMS we wrote, our mobile apps ship on Flutter, and our ecommerce and content work runs on Shopify and WordPress. Ask us to show you any of it.

What we build

THE STACK, HONESTLY EXPLAINED

PHP — CUSTOM CMS & PLATFORMS

Our own site is the proof: visuosofts.com runs on a custom PHP CMS we built from scratch. We recommend PHP when you need something WordPress can't do cleanly — custom workflows, bespoke publishing systems, membership or directory platforms — without the bloat of a framework you'll fight for years. When not to use it: if a standard WordPress site does the job, we'll say so and save you the money.

FLUTTER / DART — ONE CODEBASE, BOTH PHONES

Our mobile apps are built with Flutter: one Dart codebase shipping to iOS and Android. We recommend it when you want a native-feeling app without paying for two separate native builds and maintaining them forever. When not to use it: if your "app" is really a website in disguise, a fast mobile site costs a tenth — we'll build that instead. See <a href="/custom-mobile-app-development">custom mobile app development</a>.

WORDPRESS — CONTENT SITES THAT STAY EDITABLE

WordPress runs a huge share of the web for a reason: your team can edit it, extend it and hand it to any developer on earth. We recommend it for content-led sites, blogs and marketing platforms — see <a href="/wordpress-development">WordPress development</a>. When not to use it: high-volume ecommerce, or anything where plugin soup would be the architecture. Then it's Shopify or custom PHP.

SHOPIFY — ECOMMERCE THAT JUST SELLS

For selling online, Shopify beats a hand-rolled shop on almost every axis: checkout that converts, payments handled, and no 2am server emergencies during a sale. We recommend it for most ecommerce — see <a href="/shopify-development">Shopify development</a> — and customise it properly rather than dropping in a stock theme. When not to use it: marketplaces, complex B2B pricing logic, or subscription products we'd build as SaaS instead.

JAVASCRIPT — INTERACTIVE WEB & WEBAR

JavaScript is the engine of our interactive work: browser-based WebAR (no app download), 3D product views, configurators and rich front-end experiences. With 200+ AR projects delivered, we know what runs on a real phone on patchy Wi-Fi. When not to use it: content pages that should just load fast — we keep those lean. See <a href="/webar-development">WebAR development</a>.

WHAT WE DON'T CLAIM

You won't find Laravel, Node, Python, .NET or Ruby on this page, because we don't build with them in production — and claiming otherwise would be fiction. Plenty of agencies list every stack under the sun; we'd rather be excellent at five technologies than mediocre at twenty. If your project needs one of those, we'll tell you straight and point you in the right direction.

How we work

HOW WE PICK YOUR STACK

  1. The business problem first.

What has to work, who maintains it, what it costs to run. Tech comes second.

  2. The honest recommendation.

We propose the stack we'd pick with our own money — including "use the simpler option" or "we're not the right team for this".

  3. No lock-in games.

Standard, documented technologies and code you own outright. If you leave, another developer can pick it up.

  4. Built to last.

We optimise for software that's still running in five years, not demos that impress for five minutes.

Pricing

WHAT STACK CHOICE COSTS YOU

Stack choice is mostly a running-cost decision: as an indicative guide, a WordPress site typically starts from £2,500, a customised Shopify store from £3,500, a custom PHP platform from £8,000, and a Flutter app (iOS + Android, one codebase) from £12,000. The expensive mistake isn't the build — it's the wrong stack, rebuilt two years later. Get a free consultation and we'll tell you which one fits before you commit.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Why don't you list more technologies?

Because we only list what we ship in production. An agency that claims twenty stacks usually subcontracts nineteen of them. Our five cover the vast majority of web projects, and we'd rather be honest about the edge cases.

Is PHP still a good choice in 2026?

For the right job, absolutely — this site runs on a custom PHP CMS. It's fast to develop, cheap to host and easy to hire for. We don't recommend it because it's fashionable; we recommend it when it's the pragmatic fit.

Flutter vs native iOS and Android — what's the catch?

The catch is edge cases: if you need deep platform-specific hardware access or bleeding-edge OS features on day one, native wins. For most business apps, Flutter gets you to both stores from one codebase at roughly the cost of one native build.

Can you take over a site built on a technology you don't list?

Sometimes — it depends on the stack. We'll look at it honestly and tell you whether we can support it well or whether you'd be better with a specialist. No charge for the honest answer.

Do we own the code?

Yes. Everything we build is yours outright, documented, and in standard technologies another developer can maintain. No licences held hostage, no "call us for every change".

What if our project genuinely needs a stack you don't do?

We'll tell you — and if we know a good team for it, we'll introduce you. Winning your project at the cost of building it badly helps nobody.
